Palamos is located in the Baix Emporda district of the province of Girona and was founded in 1279 by Peter III of Aragon, who wanted to establish a new port in the area as the former Royal Port at Torroella de Montgri has become unusable due to silting. Palamos, which since these early times has become an important port with a significant fishing fleet, is located at the north end of a large bay, it has become a popular holiday destination since the 1960's, when tourism took off on the Costa Brava.
Palamos can be easily accessed from the C-31 and is situated about 40km from Girona and its airport, the historic city of Barcelona is around 100 kilometres away. Palamos has a selection of hotels including the Palamos Aparthotel, Hotel Sant Joan and Hotel Trias.
