Costa Brava Resorts - L'Escala
L'Escala Spain - An important fishing town and holiday resort, L'Escala is located at the southern end of the Bay of Roses on the Costa Brava coastline of Catalonia, north-eastern Spain. L'Escala is in the district of Alt Empordà within the province of Girona and has a population of 8,311 (2005) which of course increases significantly during the busy summer season, it has a municipal area of 16.31 km2.
A charming place, the narrow streets of the old town huddle around the historic harbour where fishermen still mend their nets much as they have done for centuries.

Situated in a historic area which was important to the Greeks and Romans, L'Escala has a long history which mostly revolves around the fishing industry and in particular sardines and anchovies. The nearby archaeological site of Empuries (Sant Marti d'Empuries) has distinct Greek and Roman sections, and was possibly the first Greek settlement on the Iberian Peninsular, founded in around 600 BC and established as a significant trading centre.
The Romans arrived in 218 BC and built their own settlement which later joined the older Greek section and became known as Emporiae, the settlement was finally abandoned in the 3rd century AD as the Roman Empire fell into decline, the site was lost and eventually uncovered at the beginning of the 20th century.
Until around 40 years ago L'Escala relied on fishing and related industries and the culture of the town is still inextricably linked to this industry, the Alfoli de la Sal is a warehouse dating from the 17th century, which was used to store salt for the preserving of fish caught by the local fishermen.
The arrival of tourism to the region in the 1960's and 1970's brought new visitors to L'Escala and though still a relatively small resort it attracts significant numbers of holidaymakers. The old town which retains much of its traditional atmosphere, has a decent selection of shops, bar and restaurants, there are also 2 small beaches which can get very busy during the summer season.
The more modern Riells area of the town can be reached by way of the seafront promenade and here you will find a larger beach together with a marina and plenty of facilities with additional shops, bars and restaurants. The Riells area of L'Escala is most favoured by International visitors while most Spanish tourists head for the old town area.
The area around L'Escala is ideal for sports enthusiasts and there are plenty of facilities for water sports such as sailing, snorkeling, windsurfing and jet-skiing, other sports well-catered for include fishing, walking, cycling and golfing.
L'Escala Hotels - L'Escala has a reasonable choice of hotels and rental accommodation including the Hotel Voramar, the Hotel Bonaire, the Hotel Nieves Mar and the Apartmentos Els Pins / Amarres.
L'Escala Markets - There is a fruit and vegetable market held most days in the old town centre, the weekly market is held every Sunday along the promenade.
L'Escala Fiestas - L'Escala holds numerous fiestas throughout the year including the Festa de la Sal in October, the Festa de L'Anxova (dedicated to the anchovies which have been so important for the town) and the Festa Major in September, with special attention given to the traditional Catalonian Sardana dancing.
L'Escala Camping - There are some camping facilities in the L'Escala area including L'Escala Paradis Camping (0034 972 770 200).
Nearby places include Empuriabrava, Sant Pere Pescador, Roses, Parc Residencial Empuries, L'Estartit, Viladamat and Begur.
L'Escala can be accessed via the G-623 from the C-31, it is about 50 kilometres from Girona and its airport, and about 135 kilometres from the city of Barcelona.
