Malgrat de Mar - Costa Brava - Spain -
Malgrat de Mar is a municipality and town on the Costa del Maresme, part of the Costa Brava in north-eastern Spain. It has a population of approximately 20,000 and a municipal area of 9.05km2, it is situated on the coast between Blanes and Pineda de Mar.
Malgrat de Mar was first populated during the 13th and 14th centuries at which time it was called Vilanova de Palafolls, the first houses were constructed on a hill known as "Es Castell". The population has grown hugely in the last 50 years and in 1950 was less than 4,000, this is due mostly to the increase in tourism to the area.
Malgrat de Mar these days is a popular tourist destination and has a good selection of hotels and holiday rental accommodation, there are a number of superb sandy beaches in and around the town, in fact some of the best beaches on the Costa Brava. There are a decent selection of bars and restaurants, the best restaurants being found in the old town, the nightlife is lively without being rowdy and there are a number of bars and discos along the seafront.
Malgrat de Mar is situated just off the N-11 between Pineda de Mar and Blanes and it can also be easily accessed from the C-32 motorway. The nearest airport is at Girona (45 kilometres), Barcelona airport is a little further at 70 kilometres. Malgrat de Mar can also be reached by railway from Barcelona and Girona.
