Costa Brava Resorts - Tossa de Mar
Tossa de Mar - One of the prettiest of the Costa Brava ("Wild Coast") resorts of northern Spain, Tossa de Mar still has the remains of its medieval walled village (Vila Vella) which has stood guard over the bay for some 800 years. Even earlier than this the town was the location of a 2nd Century Roman Villa called Turissa and it is from this Villa that Tossa de Mar derived its name.
The 12th Century walled old town stands proudly on the southern headland and hangs onto its medieval charm, with quaint cobbled streets and charming stone houses adorned with pretty flower boxes.
Tossa de Mar was one of the first Costa Brava towns to appeal to foreign visitors and among the early visitors was the famous painter Marc Chagall who came to Tossa de Mar in 1934 and stayed for the entire summer, Chagall was enchanted by the town and called it his "blue paradise". The only Chagall painting in Spain is on show in the Municipal Museum (Municipal Musea de la Villa Vella) and is called "The Celestial Violinist".
Tossa de Mar holds its weekly market on Thursdays and this is a great place to stock up on gifts and fresh produce. The nightlife is a little more reserved in Tossa de Mar which suits most visitors but the younger set and those seeking fun and the bright lights might prefer to head for the better known Lloret de Mar located some 13 kilometres south of Tossa.

There is also a music festival which is held in August.
Tossa de Mar has 3 main beaches (2 of them have "Blue Flag" status), though there are a number of sheltered coves with smaller beaches in the area. The main beaches are Platje Gran, Mar Menuda and the tiny Els Cadolar ("Stoney Place") which is popular with snorkelers.
