Girona (Gerona) is situated just off the AP-7 (E-15) motorway, north-east of the city of Barcelona. Girona has its own airport which serves much of the northern Costa Brava region, thousands of holidaymakers arrive daily on their way to the coast.

An ancient Iberian city situated in the Catalonia region of north-eastern Spain, Girona (Gerona) has a population of 86,672 (2005) and a municipal area of 79.1km2. Girona stands at the confluence of the Ter and Onyar rivers and is the capital of the province which bears the same name (Girona).
Girona has a very long history and was originally an Iberian settlement known as Gerunda, a later Roman settlement bore the same name. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Girona was controlled by the Visigoths, who came under constant attack and were eventually driven out by the Moors. The Emperor Charlemagne defeated the Arab invaders in 785 and it became one of the 14 countships of Catalonia. Between the 12th and 15th centuries Girona had a large Jewish community until they were finally expelled in 1492. Over the centuries Girona (Gerona) has suffered many attacks and has in fact been under seige on no less than 25 occasions. The French conquered the city in 1809.
Modern day Girona has become something of a tourist attraction, benefitting from the influx of holidaymakers who arrive at its airport every day. There is plenty to see and do in Girona, with its wonderful historical and cultural heritage intact for all to see, there are interesting museums where you can catch up on the history of the city, or ancient churches and cathedrals which match any in the region. If you are visiting one of the seaside resorts of the Costa Brava, take time out to visit Girona and its many attractions.
