Calella - Costa del Maresme - Costa Brava - Spain  -

Located to the north-east of Barcelona on a stretch of coast known as the Costa del Maresme, part of the better known Costa Brava, the resort of Calella is a well known and popular holiday destination. Calella is a sizeable town with a resident population of around 14,000 and an area of 7.90km2, the population increases considerably during the holiday season.

Historically there was no sign of settlements in Calella during Iberian times, though there is evidence of Roman settlements in the area, it would certainly have been known of by the Moors during the Arab conquest but the birth of Calella was in the early 14th century when the King granted it the right to hold a weekly market (1327), and Viscount Bernat II of Cabrera conceded the deed of village to the dwellings in the area (1338), in 1497 the village is recorded as having 35 dwellings. Sustained growth began after the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714) and ship building and textiles industries grew up to complement the existing agricultural and fishing industries. The 20th century saw an increase in textiles and the arrival of tourism, which was to become most important for the town.

Modern day Calella is a well loved holiday destination, aided by its proximity to Barcelona with its many tourist attractions. Calella boasts 3 kilometres of beaches, some with 'Blue Flag' status, and also has rocky areas with some magnificent coves and bays. Calella attracts visitors of all ages and has something to offer everyone, a super climate, fine beaches, vibrant nightlife, excellent sports facilities and a historical and cultural heritage.
