Canet de Mar - Costa del Maresme - Costa Brava - Spain -
Located about 38 kilometres from Barcelona on a stretch of coast known as the Costa del Maresme, the town of Canet de Mar is a popular seaside resort with a resident population of about 11,000 and an area of 6.20km2.
Canet de Mar was founded in the 11th century and was originally called Valle de Canet y Romaguera, the name Canet was taken from the Latin canna (cane). Canet de Mar later became known for its Modernist architecture, and there are a number of interesting Modernist buildings which can still be seen today. From the 1960's onwards Canet de Mar benefitted from the modern industry of tourism and this is now the towns main source of income although it is also renowned for the growing of flowers and strawberries.
Present day Canet de Mar is a popular tourist destination with a good range of facilities and one of the best beaches in the region. Places of interest in the town include the Plaça Macià where you will find the ruins of an ancient watchtower (15th - 16th centuries) which was built to warn of attacks from Barbary pirates, the parochial church (1793-1805) with its 42 metre bell tower and the Santuaria de la Misericòrdia, one of the finest maritime temples in Catalonia.
