Costa Brava Resorts - Roses

Roses Spain - Situated at the northern end of the sweeping Bay of Roses, the fishing port and tourist resort of Roses Spain is a perfect setting for a beach holiday with plenty of facilities and accommodation choices. Roses is located in the Alt Empordà district of the Girona province of Catalonia and is one of the Costa Brava's best known locations. Roses has a population of around 18,000 (2007) and a municipal area of 45.91 square kilometres.

Roses Spain has a long and interesting history and many believe that it was founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC and named Rhodes after their homeland, it may however be more likely that it was founded some time later in around the 5th century BC. Whichever is true, it was certainly settled by the Greeks and some remains of their time in the area can still be seen today. It was later settled by the Romans, and it was the Romans who established the fishing industry which is still important today and has been the source of Roses economic survival for many centuries. Remains from the Roman period date from the second century BC onwards and after the collapse of the Roman Empire, the town seems to have been abandoned

The first written evidence of Roses is a document mentioning the Monastery of Santa Maria de Roses in around AD 944, the medieval town seems to have developed around this monastery. In 1402 the Empuries district came under the control of the Crown of Aragon and Roses was given the right to have its own municipal government. Significant fortifications were begun in 1543 by order of Charles V, to give Roses protection against pirates from North Africa, though the town was still plundered by Turks before the fortifications were complete. Roses later became a military garrison and many of the town's citizens moved outside the city walls founding what is today the modern town of Roses. The town has been attacked many times over the years and was held by the French for a short time in the 17th century, its fortifications were finally destroyed by the French in 1814 along with the Castell de la Trinitat.

Roses suffered an economic crisis in 1879 when an outbreak of Phylloxera destroyed the grapevines which provided a significant wine producing industry, many of the town's inhabitants moved to Barcelona to seek employment, other emigrated from Spain altogether. Roses enjoyed a revival during the latter part of the 20th century with the growth of tourism attracting many visitors to the area, this revival has continued and Roses is now one of the most popular tourist resorts along this part of the coast.

The star-shaped citadel the Ciutadella located at the entrance to Roses is a 16th century fortress which was built on the former ruins of the Greek and Roman settlements, part of these ancient remains can be viewed here. Excavations have taken place in recent year and in the 1990's significant restoration was carried out on the walls of the Ciutadella, there is also a museum within the Ciutadella which opened in 2004.
