Figueres - Located in the north-eastern corner of the Spanish region of Catalonia, the town of Figueres is the capital of the Alt Empordà district, within the province of Girona on what is known as the Costa Brava (Wild Coast).
Figueres with its population of around 40,000 is well known as the birthplace of the famous Spanish artist Salvador Dali, and now houses a large museum dedicated to its famous son. The Teatre-Museu Gala Salvador Dali attracts thousands of visitors each year, and since it opened in 1974, has continued to grow into what is now the largest and most diverse collection of his works.
Figueres has its place in history as the location of the wedding of Philip V and Maria Luisa of Savoy in 1701, an event which led to the Spanish War of Succession.
Also of interest in Figueres is the Museu de Joguets (Toy Museum), houses in what was formerly the Hotel de Paris, situated in the Rambla de Figueres, founded in 1982, it contains over 4,000 exhibits of toys and animated objects. Also worth a visit is the parish church of Sant Pere, the oldest parts of which date from the 11th century, the Sant Ferran Castle built during the 18th century and the Jewish Quarter, one of the oldest sections of the town.
Figueres is located about 40 kilometres from Girona and 140 kilometres from Barcelona.
