Blanes - Costa Brava - Spain  -

Located just south of the famous resort of Lloret de Mar is another popular Costa Brava coastal town called Blanes. With a resident population of 38,368 (2007), Blanes is a sizeable town and is also a popular holiday destination, its population swelling considerably during the summer months.

Situated in the Selva district of the province of Girona (Gerona) within the region of Catalonia, Blanes has a history going back many centuries and while there were probably settlements in Pre-Roman times, the first real settlement appeared in around 218BC in the form of the Roman Blanda (or Blandae) located in the area of La Penya dels Padrets. Blanes suffered attacks by the Moors from the 8th century onwards and the first mention of Blanes castle dates from 1002AD, the town was then a feudal dependency coming under the control of the Cabreras and later the Blanes family.

Over the centuries Blanes has mostly relied on the sea for its economic survival and fishing and boatbuilding have been the main industries. The arrival of tourism in the 1950’s resulted in the population of the town doubling between 1955 and 1970. Blanes is now a popular tourist destination with a decent selection of hotels and rental accommodation, and a good range of facilities, it boasts 4 kilometres of beaches, coves and bays.

Places of interest to visit in Blanes include the Vescomptes de Cabrera, dating from the 12th century, the Sant Joan tower dating from the 13th century, and the Font Gotica a magnificent fountain dating from the 15th century.
