Lloret de Mar - Costa Brava - Spain -
Probably the most popular holiday destination on the Costa Brava coastline of north-eastern Spain, Lloret de Mar is located in the Selva district (comarca) of the province of Girona, Catalonia. Having a resident population of around 34,997 (2007 census) and a land area of 48.71km2, Lloret de Mar is the second largest town in the district of Selva and is situated about 75 kilometres from the city of Barcelona.
Lloret de Mar these days is primarily a holiday resort and in particular a ‘package holiday’ destination, most of the major UK tour operators feature holidays to the town, and during the summer months the population grows to over 200,000. This was not always the case however as the history of Lloret de Mar goes back to its founding in 1001 AD and it has a medieval castle (Castell de Sant Joan) to remind us of its early history.
Todays visitors arrive mainly to enjoy the superb climate, the vibrant nightlife and the excellent sandy beaches. Lloret de Mar boasts 7 kilometres of coastline and this includes a number of beaches and sandy coves many of which have been awarded ‘Blue Flag’ status for cleanliness and safety.
Places to visit in Lloret de Mar include the aforementioned Castell de Sant Joan (Saint Joan’s Castle), the Museo del Mar (Museum of the Sea) an interesting cultural centre outlining Lloret de Mar’s maritime history, and the Santa Clotilde Gardens which are located in a cliff-top position with spectacular sea views.
