Malgrat de Mar was first inhabited in the thirteenth and fouteenth centuries when it was known as Vilanova de Palafolls, although there is evidence of a Roman settlement dating from the 2nd century BC. Malgrat de Mar formerly depended on agriculture and fishing for its survival, but tourism has now taken over as its main source of income. The town has a number of interesting places to visit including the Church of Sant Nicolau, the present church dating from the 18th century but with remains from earlier times.

Pineda de Mar is located on the N-11 and can be accessed from the C-32 motorway, it can also be reached by rail from Girona. The closes airports are at Girona (45 km) and Barcelona (60 km).
