Located at the southern end of the Bay of Roses the ancient fishing town of L'Escala has held onto its fishing tradition while embracing the modern invasion of tourism, its charming old town comprising narrow pedestrianised streets, clustered around the historic harbour. Nearby Sant Marti d'Empuries is possibly the oldest Greek settlement in the region, with later Roman sections added during their invasion of the Iberian Peninsular.
L'Escala is situated between L'Estartit and Sant Pere Pescador and can be accessed via the G-623 from the C-31, it is about 50 kilometres from Girona and its airport and 135 kilometres from Barcelona.
