Palma de Mallorca is a historic city with a surprising variety of cultural and historic attractions, while many of the southern Mallorca resorts were built for tourism and have very little historical interest, Palma is quite the opposite with much to interest and excite visitors who would like to see a little of the real Mallorca.
The major attractions which are of interest to visitors are the stunning Gothic cathedral (La Seu), construction of which started in 1230 after the Christian reconquest of Mallorca, Bellver Castle which was started in 1307 by order of Jaime II and the Almudaina Palace, former palace of the Moorish rulers of Mallorca and later rebuilt and remodelled by subsequent Christian monarchs.
The airport for the island of Mallorca (Majorca) is located south-east of the city, about 8 kilometres from the city centre, it is the only airport on Mallorca. Those not arriving by air will probably arrive by ferry to Palma de Mallorca port from mainland Spain via Valencia, Barcelona or Denia or from Mahon in Menorca or Ibiza Town (Eivissa) in Ibiza.
