Ibiza

Ibiza -
One of the popular Balearic Islands located off the south-eastern coast of Spain, Ibiza (Eivissa) has a history going back to the times of the Phoenicians, when they founded a port on the island in about 654 BC, they called it Ibossim and over the ensueing centuries it was called Pitiusas (pine covered islands) by the Greeks and Ebusus by the Romans. Ibiza became an important trading post on the Mediterranean trade route and the island itself produced dyes, wool, salt and the Roman fish sauce Garum. For many years it was controlled by Carthage and was one of the last outposts for the Carthaginians after the Second Punic War (218 - 201 BC). Ibiza was later conquered by the Moors and remained under muslim control until 1235 when it was re-conquered for the Christians by Jamie I of Aragon.
Ibiza was untouched by tourism until the 1960's, but since then, has become one of the top European hotspots, attracting millions of visitors every year. In recent years it has become the clubbers capital of Europe attracting the young and beautiful and developing its own music scene, of late it has been trying to shake off its "sex and alcohol" image in order to attract a more family oriented clientel. There are still plenty of unspoilt resorts on the island which are perfect for family holidays and much of the island still retains its old character, especially in the north with large areas of wooded hills together with orange and almond groves.
