Ibiza Town (Eivissa) - Situated in the south-east of Ibiza is the capital Ibiza Town (Eivissa), the largest and most attractive town on the island. Ibiza Town is a busy place and is visited, at some point, by almost everyone who comes to the island, all major roads radiate from it and life on the island revolves around it.
Originally founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC, Ibiza Town still boasts some remains from these early times. Its Dalt Vila (Upper Town) still has fortifications erected in the 16th century and culture seekers will certainly not be disappointed with a visit to this part of town. At its highest point stands the Santa Maria de las Nieves cathedral completed in 1592 and largely rebuilt during the 18th century.
For a condensed history of this fascinating place head for the Archaeological Museum (Museo Arqueològic) in the Plaça de la Catedral, here you can view artefacts going back to the town’s earliest times.
Other places of interest to visit include the 16th century church of Santo Domingo in Carrer Balanset, the Puig des Molins ancient burial site in Via Romana, the Sa Torre defensive tower overlooking the harbour and the Sa Penya district, a pretty area once inhabited by the town’s fishermen.
If you do not wish to get caught up in Ibiza Town’s vibrant nightlife scene, then head back to your resort before darkness falls, as after this the streets become like one giant party, with the town having some of the best known night-clubs on the island, such as Pacha, Angels and El Divino.
Situated in the south-east of the island, Ibiza Town is the location of the island's airport and all major roads radiate from it, there is also a major port with ferry links to the mainland and to the other Balearic Islands.
