Ibiza's history goes back to the times of the Phoenicians (7th century BC) when they founded a port on the island which was situated on their important Mediterranean trading route, it was also visited by the Greeks who called it (along with neighbouring Formentera) Pitiusas meaning "pine covered islands", it was subsequently settled by the Romans and later the Moors who were finally expelled in 1245 by Christian forces under Jaime I of Aragon.
Ibiza today is a popular holiday destination with a reputation as a clubbers paradise, although the island is currently trying to shake off its "sex and alcohol" reputation.
There are still plenty of laid back resorts which are perfect for family holidays away from the hustle and bustle of the clubbers scene. In these locations you can relax on the beach and enjoy the sea and the sunny Ibiza weather.
Ibiza can be accessed from a wide range of UK and International airports and also by ferry from such places as Alicante, Valencia and Denia on the Spanish mainland, and Formentera and Palma de Mallorca in the Balearic Islands.
