Valldemossa

Valldemossa - Mallorca - Spain -
A charming little mountain village with a population of about 1,800 Valldemossa is located in the north-west of the island of Mallorca (Majorca) in the Balearic Islands, Spain.
Forever associated with Polish composer Frederick Chopin and his lover, French novelist George Sand, who stayed there in the winter of 1838-39, renting a former monk’s cell in the Real Cartuja de Jesus de Nazaret monastery (in the Plaça de la Cartuja de Valldemossa), Valldemossa is on the Mallorca cultural tourist trail for this reason alone, and attracts a steady flow of visitors throughout the year.
The room in the monastery in which Chopin lived (known as Chopin’s Cell), still contains the piano on which he composed several works during his stay there.
Valldemossa also has a unique 17th century Farmacia (Pharmacy) with numerous strange potions and preparations on display, there is also an art museum with some significant works on show including some illustrations by Picasso and paintings by Joan Miro, Antoni Tapies and Mallorca’s own artist Juli Ramis.
The tourist office for Valldemossa can be found in Avenida Palma 7 (Tel: (0034) 971-612-019). The main fiestas held in Valldemossa are dedicated to Santa Catalina Tomas (Mallorca’s Patron Saint who was born in Valldemossa in 1531), held in July, and San Bartolomé (held in August).
