A delightful little mountain village, Valldemossa is a popular tourist attraction for Mallorca (Majorca) mostly due to the fact that the famous composer Frederick Chopin and his French novelist lover George Sand lived there during the winter of 1838-39. The couple moved to Valldemossa to escape the gossip of Paris, and because they though it would be beneficial for Chopin's bad health.
Places to visit in Valldemossa include the monastery where Chopin and Sand stayed (the Real Cartuja de Jesus de Nazaret), the 17th century pharmacy, the art museum (with works by Picasso, Miro and Tapies), the shrine of Catalina Tomas (Mallorca's Patron Saint) and actor Michael Douglas's Costa Nord cultural centre, his personal tribute to Mallorca.
Valldemossa is located on the MA-1130 which runs directly to the capital Palma de Mallorca, it is about 20 kilometres to Palma and 25 kilometres to the airport to the south-east of Palma de Mallorca.
