The small town of Ses Salines in southern Mallorca is named after the nearby salt lakes and marshes, Salines de Llevant, which once brought wealth to the town. The salt marshes are now an important area for wildlife with a large variety of bird species visiting it during the migration season.
The name also applies to a small municipality around the town and the whole area was a prime area for salt production, which dates back 2,000 years to the times of the Romans, to whom salt was very important and often used as a currency.
Ses Salines is located on the MA-6100 between Colonia Sant Jordi and Santanyi.
