Guide to Vilafames, a historic walled town in the Costa del Azahar region.
Costa del Azahar Towns - Vilafames
Vilafames - One of the more interesting inland towns of the Valencia region, Vilafames is a charming old place with a charismatic old quarter of white-walled houses, lining winding, narrow streets. The top of the hill on which Vilafames is built is crowned by the restored round turret of its castle, which dates from the Arab occupation.
People have been living in the area around Vilafames for thousands of years, in fact anthropological remains found in nearby caves, date back some 80,000 years. Much later the Iberians and then the Romans had settlements there, though the present town dates from the times of the Moors, who occupied Spain between the 8th and 13th centuries.
Among places of cultural and ecological interest in and around Vilafames are the Museo Popular de Arte Contemporáneo, housed in the 15th century Palacio del Battle, boasting a large collection of contemporary art and sculpture (Miró, Genovés, Canogar), the La Font de les Piques, a fountain and waterfall producing water with diuretic properties, the Iglesia de la Asunción, an 18th century church with some fine ceramic artwork, the Paraje de Sant Miguel (a shrine found when heading towards San Juan de Moro), and the aforementioned castle, with foundations put in place by the Moors, and a restored circular keep, offering spectacular views over the town and surrounding countryside.
Vilafames is located inland from Benicassim and Castellon de la Plana, it can be accessed from the CV-15 between La Pobla Tornesa and Vall d'Alba.
