Orpesa (Oropesa del Mar) - A more laid back alternative to the bustling resorts of Benicassim and Peniscola, Orpesa (Oropesa del Mar) on the Costa del Azahar, Valencia, Spain, has a couple of decent beaches and the usual range of facilities. Orpesa is located in an area of great natural beauty and the surrounding coastline is peppered with pretty coves and inlets.
Orpesa has a history going back many centuries and in the old town you will find the ruins of a castle built by the Moors during their occupation of the region. After the Christian reconquest, the castle was improved and re-fortified to defent the town from pirate attacks, which were frequent along this coastline. There are several defensive watchtowers along this section of the coast, built during the 16th century, again to warn of impending pirate attacks.
Beach lovers will be in their element in Orpesa, to the north of the town are the beaches of Amplàries and Morro de Gos, to the south the popular La Concha beach. Nature lovers will also enjoy the area, with the nearby Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Natural Park, great for hiking and birdwatching.
Close to Orpesa you will find the huge Marina D'Or holiday complex, said to be the largest holiday and vacation resort in Europe, it attracts many new visitors to the still relatively unknown Costa del Azahar.
Orpesa is located to the north of Benicassim and can be accessed from the N-340, or the AP-7 motorway.
