Teruel



Teruel -
Teruel is a town located in the Aragon region of Spain and is the capital of the Teruel Province, it has a population of approximately 34,000 (2006 Census) and is situated in a remote and mountainous location. Teruel is well known for is Jamón Serrano (cured ham) and for its elaborate celebrations and fiestas.
Teruel has a history going back to pre-historic times but its known history mostly begins during the Arab occupation and there are still a number of monuments and remains dating back to those long ago times. Teruel is also noted for once having a sizeable Jewish community especially during the 13th and 14th Centuries when their commerce and industry brought wealth and importance to Teruel.
Teruel suffered badly during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and the famous Battle of Teruel was one of the fiercest fought during this devastating war.
Interesting places to visit in Teruel today include the Church of San Miguel (12th Century), Torre de San Martin (13th Century, the Gothic Church of Saint Francis (14th Century) and the Los Arcos Aqueduct from the 16th Century.
