Castellon de la Plana - Formerly an inland town, built on elevated ground for security, Castellón's capital, Castellon de la Plana, was moved closer to the coast during the 13th century. A busy commercial and university city, with a population of over 160,000, Castellon de la Plana has an interesting old town which is well worth a visit, if you are in the Costa del Azahar region.

Most of the best historic monuments in the city can be found around the Plaza Mayor, here the cathedral with its 190 foot bell tower (El Fadri), was built in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, other places worth visiting are the Convento de Capuchinas, the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes and the Museo Etnológico de la Diputación.

Four kilometres east of the centre, you will find the main harbour - El Grau de Castellon, the main port for exports in the region, and also where the local fishing craft land their daily catches of fish and prawns. Castellon de la Plana's prime beaches lie north of the harbour area.
