A historic town located between Nerja and Velez-Malaga in the region of Andalucia, Torrox has a history going back to the times of the Phoenicians and Greeks who plied their trade along this coastline in the centuries BC, a Roman city was founded in the 1st century AD reaching its peak in the 4th and 5th centuries.
Occupied by the Moors, between the 8th and 14th centuries, Torrox was well known for the production of silk fabrics, almonds and figs. Freed by the Christians in 1488, the population of Torrox diminished as remaining moriscos were expelled, some remainng until 1570.
Torrox and its coastal area Torrox Costa is now a popular holiday destination, quieter than many of its Costa del Sol neighbours. Torrox can be reached by way of the AP-7 or the N-340 and is about 47 kilometres from Malaga.
