Mijas - Costa del Sol - Spain
A town and municipality in Andalucia, southern Spain, Mijas is one of the traditional "white villages" of the region. Originally founded by the Tartessians in the 6th century AD, Mijas was first called 'Tamisa' and later 'Mixa', before assuming its present name.
Mijas is situated just inland from the Costa del Sol coastline and its well known resorts of Fuengirola and Benalmadena, it is around 450 metres above sea level and its old town retains much of its traditional Andalucian charm, among its places to visit are the Ermita del Puerto chapel, located on a mountain above the town, the tiny bullring, which is an unusual square shape and the cavelike shrine of La Virgen de la Peña (the patron saint of Mijas).
The coastal limb of Mijas, Mijas Costa is adjacent to Fuengirola and is a popular holiday destination. Mijas is surrounded by some 7 golf courses including the huge La Cala Golf Resort and the well known Mijas Golf, which comprises two golf courses designed by Robert Trent Jones.
Mijas is in a good location for exploring much of the Costa del Sol, with plenty of excellent coastal resorts and also some interesting towns and cities within reasonable driving distance. You could take a trip to the amazing Ronda, spend a day in Seville, or pay a visit to the charismatic city of Granada.
Mijas can be reached via the AP-7 (E-15) motorway or from the N-340 coast road.
