One of the more fashionable of the Costa del Sol coastal resorts, Nerja is an attractive town perched on a clifftop overlooking several sandy bays and coves and surrounded by the beautiful Sierra de Almijara mountains. It is ideally located for visiting a number of interesting places and is within comfortable reach of Malaga, Granada and the Sierra Nevada.
Nerja has a long history, demonstrated by a series of cave paintings found in the nearby Nerja caves, which are at least 20,000 years old. The caves discovered in 1959 and lying to the east of the town, have some immense chambers, one which has even been converted to host concerts and events.
The popular promenade of Nerja runs around a rocky promontory known as El Balcón Europa, a viewpoint from which can be enjoyed stunning views of the sea, it is lined with al-fresco cafés and bars and forms the heart of tourist activity in the town. It is said it was given its name by King Alfonso XII who visited the town in 1885. Nerja has a number of small attractive beaches and coves and is a popular area with scuba divers and water sports enthusiasts.

Nerja is about 60 kilometres from Malaga airport and can be easily accessed from the AP-7 motorway or the N-340.
