Towns of Spain - Albatera

More and more people are discovering the joys of moving inland to villages well away from the crowded coastline. We decided to find out what attractions these villages hold. This week we are looking at Albatera in the Vega Baja region.

Situated in the north zone of the lower plain of the River Segura, Albatera could be mistaken for being a sleepy quiet Spanish village, but over the last few years more and more people are discovering its hidden charm and the bustling way of life.

With around 10,000 inhabitants Albatera is a medium sized village of quaint town houses nestled along winding palm tree lined side streets, centred round the village square with the impressive church and its beautiful baroque door.

The village's economic activities are almost evenly split between agriculture and industry, and a complex network of canals and irrigation channels, some dating back to Roman times, mean that 60 percent of Albatera’s cultivable land is now irrigated. Citric fruits, vegetables and dates are some of the typical produce grown, which farmers take to markets throughout the province. In addition to agriculture, hemp products such as brooms and brushes are also produced.

Just on the outside of the centre is the Parque de la Huerta. Set amongst 30,000 square metres the meandering walkway passes through established and indigenous fauna, boasting a colourful range of species. With views of the surrounding mountains it is the perfect escape from village life and has a play area for children. In the heart of the park lies the impressive outdoor auditorium that seats 3,000 people. Opened in 1999 it marks the council’s efforts to introduce more cultural activities and a social area for residents and it now has an extensive cultural programme thanks to the opening of the new Casa del Cultura adjoining the public library.

Albatera crosses the N-340 Valencia - Alicante - Murcia interstate road. To get to the village from the motorway take exit 78 North from Alicante and exit 78 South from Murcia.
