Villages of the Vega Baja: Dolores
When the War of Spanish Succession between the Bourbons and the Austrian Habsburgs divided Spain the Cardinal of Cartagena-Murcia, Luis Antonio de Belluga y Moncada, sided with the Bourbons. After their victory Felipe V granted the cardinal the title of 'Field Marshall' of Valencia.
The Cardinal had a grand project to drain the marshy land of the Vega Baja and use it for farming - the rent obtained from this land would then be donated to charitable works. Several villages were founded on this land, Dolores being one of these.
Dolores is essentially an agricultural village dedicated to growing fruit and vegetables, especially artichokes with huertana being typical local cuisine, which is basically everything from the orchard, taking advantage of the fresh greens and vegetables, with poultry and game going in to some of the local dishes. It boasts a thriving weekly market every Friday giving people the chance to purchase and sample some of the locally grown goods.
The pretty village square, surrounded by businesses and coffee shops is centred around the church where exquisite paintings by Salcillo and sculptures by Roque López can be viewed as people pass away the afternoon.
Dolores is also known for its cattle raising and this weekend hosted the 14th National Competition of Purebread Spanish Horses. The ‘Feria Granadera’ (livestock fair) attracts some of the most elite and reputable cattle owners and plays host to hundreds of equestrian lovers watching dressage and show jumping competitions.
It’s August Fair also attracts large numbers from surrounding areas.
Dolores is situated east of Catral Alicante and is easily assessible from Guardamar turning off the N-332 following signs for Rojales.
