Lisbon is the largest city in Portugal and also the country's capital, it has a city population of around half a million, though its Metropolitan population is approximately 2.8 million, it is also in the wealthiest region of Portugal. Known by the Greeks as Olissipo, by the time the Romans arrived in the city, it was already over 1,000 years old, after the Romans came the Visigoths and they were in turn followed by the Moors in the 8th century. The Christian reconquest of Lisbon took place in 1147 since when it has been the main economic, political and cultural centre of Portugal. Lisbon has its own International Airport (Portela Airport) which is located within the city limits.
