Vilamoura Portugal - A purpose built resort on the Algarve coastline of southern Portugal, Vilamoura is located within the municipality of Loule and is around 14 miles west of Faro. Begun in the 1970's Vilamoura is now one of the largest tourist complexes in Europe, covering an area of some 2,000 hectares, at its heart is a luxury marina, backed by a number of hotels, bars and restaurants, the marina itself has a capacity for over one thousand craft, and it is from the marina that visitors can take boat trips and participate in the many water sports facilities that are available.
For golfing enthusiasts, plenty of facilities are on offer with numerous fine courses in the immediate area, families will no doubt enjoy the Atlantic Park Waterpark and amongst the other fine attractions are a Tennis Centre, a Lawn Bowling Club, a Riding School and a Shooting Centre.
Beach lovers should not feel left out on a visit to Vilamoura, as the main beach stretches for some 3 kilometres and carries 'Blue Flag' status for cleanliness. The beach area offers the usual range of facilities including sun loungers, parasols, bars, restaurants and water sports.
Culture seekers can head for the Cerro da Vila Museu e Estacao Arqueologica, located to the north of Vilamoura beach, here you find remains of a Roman settlement dating from the 3rd century.
