Alvor Portugal

Guide to Alvor, a fishing village and holiday destination on the Algarve.

Resorts of the Algarve - Alvor

Alvor Portugal - Situated to the west of Portimao on the Algarve coastline of southern Portugal, the tranquil fishing village of Alvor is now an emerging holiday destination. Especially popular for golfing and spa holidays, Alvor is more peaceful than some nearby resorts and has not yet been spoiled by mass tourism.

Possibly settled as long ago as the Neolithic Period, Alvor was later a Carthaginian settlement and became known as Ipses during the Roman occupation of the region. Taken over by the Moors during the 8th century, when it was called Albur, Alvor changed hands several times before eventually coming under Christian control again in 1250.

Most of the original village was destroyed in the great earthquake of 1755, one of the few surviving buildings being the 16th century parish church (Igreza Matriz).

Still retaining much of its old fishing village charm, Alvor today attracts numerous tourists who visit to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, the fine sandy beach, the excellent golfing facilities and the local bars and seafood restaurants.

Alvor is situated to the west of Portimao and can be accessed from the N-125 or the A-22, it is about 65 kilometres from Faro.
