The name Albufeira`s has Arab links which date back to the eighth century when the Moors were in Portugal. They named it Al-Buhera which is the `Castle on the Sea`. For five centuries Al-Buhera, as well as Faro, was a hotspot for trade influenced by the Arabs, particularly with North Africa. If you wander around the old town in Albufeira, look around and you will see connections between the narrow streets and the Moorish influence.

Faro International Airport is the gateway to the Algarve as it is only 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) from Faro – and more than five million passengers use this modern airport on their way to the resorts of the region. The airport is operated by Aeroportos de Portugal.
