Portimao Portugal
Portimao Portugal -
The Algarve's second largest city, Portimao has a population of around 45,000 and is situated in the district of Faro (the Algarve's largest city). The main fishing port for the region, Portimao has a long tradition of fishing stretching back many centuries.
Until 1924, known as Vila Nova de Portimao, its origins date back to the centuries BC, when it was a trading port for ancient Greeks, Phoenicians and Carthaginians. Called Burj Munt during the Arab occupation of Iberia, Portimao unfortunately lost most of its historic buildings during the great earthquake of 1755 (known as the Lisbon Earthquake).
The present day city is a mostly commercial centre with a significant tourism industry, being ideally located to explore the Algarve region and to access some of the finest beaches in the area.
Nearby places of interest to visit include the Roman Villa at Figueira, the Caves of Estombar and the burial tombs at Alcalar.
The Portimao area is ideal for water sports and is especially popular with golfers and anglers, many fishing and boat trips being available from the port.
