A city and municipality in the Algarve region of Portugal, Albufeira has a population of just under 20,000 which rises considerably during the busy summer months, as this is a popular location for holidaymakers visiting this busy stretch of coastline. Albufeira nightlife is centred around the "strip" near Montechoro where there are a large number of bars and clubs.
Albufeira has a long history and was visited by Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians before being founded as Baltum by the Romans, later occupied by the Moors (the name comes from the arabic "Al Buhera" (castle of the sea), it was developed as an agricultural area. Fishing also became important for the town, and the industry helped the town recover after the devastating earthquake of 1755 which all but destroyed it.
Albufeira can be reached from the A-22 motorway and is around 35 kilometres from Faro and its airport.
