Cocentaina - Costa Blanca - Spain - Just north of Alcoy on the N340 lies the old Spanish Town of Cocentaina. Sitting beside the River Serpis and overlooked by the Mariola mountains, Cocentaina is a thriving town with a rich and ancient history.
Though most of Cocentainas known history begins with the Arab Conquest (8th - 13th Centuries) it has been a settlement as far back as the Neolithic Era. There are a number of cave paintings in the area dating back to these ancient times.
During the Moorish occupation Cocentaina was an important centre and some evidence of this time still remains to this day, including the remnants of an Arab watchtower which still looks down on the town.
Cocentaina's most important tourist attraction is the Dalau Comtal a medieval fortified palace dating back to the 13th Century. The palace has been extensively restored and contains some fine examples of Renaissance and Baroque architecture.
As with most Spanish towns and villages the main fiesta of the year is the Moors and Christians (Moros y Cristianos) festival which takes place in the second week of August.
