Villajoyosa - Costa Blanca - Spain -
Lying on the Costa Blanca coastline some 10km south of Benidorm is the charming seaside town of Villajoyosa. Famous for its brightly coloured houses and for its chocolate, Villajoyosa has a name which means 'Jewelled Town'.
Historically Villajoyosa has relied mostly on fishing for its economic survival, and fishing remains today as an important industry for the town - the bustling harbour and busy afternoon fish market are important features of Villajoyosa.
The bright blue, yellow and red houses were painted so that fishermen could recognise their home while out at sea and therefore safely find their way home.
Chocolate production has been a feature of Villajoyosa since the 19th Century and the town has often been called 'Chocolate Heaven'.
Villajoyosa is a regular stop-off point for the many free 'blanket trips' which operate along this coast, so if you are visiting the region and fancy a free trip to the town, look out for these trips.
Villajoyosa has a warm and temperate Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers and very little rainfall. It has some fine sandy beaches and clear sparkling waters.
Villajoyosa is located just off the N332 coast road between Benidorm and Alicante, it is around 32 km from Alicante and 10 km from Benidorm.
