Fuentes de Algar

Pictures and guide for the Fuentes de Algar waterfalls, Costa Blanca, Spain.

Costa Blanca Attractions - Fuentes de Algar Waterfalls

Fuentes de Algar WaterfallFuentes de Algar - Although there are lots of interesting places to visit along the Costa Blanca, the ‘Fuentes de Algar’ (el Algar waterfalls) natural park is perhaps one of the most picturesque. It is a natural beauty spot high up in the mountains behind Altea, which is incredibly green and rich in crystal clear water.

The ‘Algar Water Falls’ are found 2.5 km from the village of Callosa d’Ensarria, at the source of the river from which it's name is derived. The region is well known as a large fruit growing area and in particular for its groves of nisperos. Some 22 million kilos of nisperos are produced in the Guadalest and Algar valleys every year.

Once you have gained entrance to the waterfalls, you will feel the fresh clean air and hear the noise of the tumbling waters. You then arrive at the main pool to where the largest of the waterfalls cascades down. Many people take their first dip here, but do remember that the water is icy cold, even in the hot summer months.

A small wooden bridge has been erected across this pool to enable you to climb the steps up to the top (the picture above is taken from the bridge looking directly into the main waterfall). There are an additional set of steps behind the restaurant, which, although quite steep, are really worth going up, to see the main cascade under rushes, oleanders and fig trees.

At the top of the valley, a wide-open space has been set out with barbeques, table, benches, toilets and showers. Several coach companies offer trips, sometimes combined with a visit to the ‘Castell de Guadalest’ and the nearby animal sanctuary, but if you wish to make your own way there, from the A-7 motorway take the road to Callosa d’en Sarria (turn off near Benidorm) and you will find that ‘Fuentes del Algar’ are well sign posted. There is also a cactus garden nearby which is another place to see if you are visiting.

There are numerous parking areas under the shade of trees or carports, a small train museum and an ‘arboretum’ containing Mediterranean spice plants, aromatic essence of oils and perfumes.
