The town has a history going back to the Neolithic Period and cave paintings have been found there from this period. The town is overlooked by the remains of an ancient Arab watchtower and by the Mariola Mountains

Cocentaina town has a population of around 11,000 and its municiple district has an area of approximately 379 km2, it enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate with hot summers, mild winters and low rainfall. Cocentaina is situated some 110 km from Valencia and 60 km from Alicante. There is regular transport by bus and train to Valencia and by bus to Alicante.

Places worth visiting nearby include Benidorm, Alcoi, Guadalest, Benifallim, Penaguila, Xativa and Denia.
