Lanzarote is the most easterly of the Canary Islands and the nearest to the coast of Africa, it has a land area of 795km2 and a resident population of about 127,000. It is made up almost entirely of solidified volcanic lava which has spilt over from its 200 plus volcanic peaks, giving it an eerie moon-like landscape. Lanzarote's dramatic landscape features the mountain ranges of Famara and Ajaches in the north-east the Timanfaya National Park is a protected area.
Other interesting places to visit include the Jameos del Agua caves, located to the north of Arrecife, and the peaceful Isla Graciosa, the smallest inhabited island in the Canaries. Travel around the island is relatively easy, as it has decent roads and also a reasonable bus service, however you would be best advised to hire a car for your visit.
For the last forty years or so, tourism has been the main source of income for the island, other industries include agriculture and fishing. Tourism is centred mainly around the 3 major resorts, Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca, the International airport is located in the capital Arrecife.
The main draw of the island is of course its fantastic weather, especially during the traditional English winter months, along with the other Canary Islands it has been one of the UK's major winter holiday destinations.
