Puerto del Carmen -
Located on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Spain, the former fishing village of Puerto del Carmen has become one of Lanzarote’s best known resorts. Attracted by its wonderful beaches, some of the finest on the island, holidaymakers arrive in their thousands all year round to enjoy the wonderful climate and the town’s excellent facilities.
Though there has been much development in Puerto del Carmen in recent years, the old fishing harbour still retains much of its original charm and atmosphere. The many restaurants around the harbour area are the best place to try out some of the tasty local seafood dishes. The harbour is protected by a high breakwater and is packed with fishing boasts and sailing craft. The harbour is the place to take a boat excursion and it is from here that you can enjoy a trip to Fuertaventura or Isla Los Lobos, or maybe just a short trip in the popular glass-bottomed boat to get a glimpse of the abundant marine life which thrives in the local waters.
To the east of the harbour the beaches stretch for about 12 kilometres, dotted along the Avenida de las Playas, they include Playa Grande, Playa de los Pocillos and Playa de Matagorda, all of the beaches carry ‘Blue Flag’ status. The seafront promenade is lined with bars, restaurants, night-clubs and shops, especially in the area of Playa Grande, and visitors will find plenty to amuse them during the day and long into the night.
There are some excellent water sports facilities available in Puerto del Carmen, with a selection of diving schools and windsurfing centres.
Puerto del Carmen has a good choice of hotels in which to stay during your visit so you should have no problem in finding adequate accommodation.
Puerto del Carmen is located in the municipality of Tias in the south-eastern section of Lanzarote and is only a 10 minute drive from Arrecife airport.
