Santa Pola - Once a quiet sleepy fishing village, now Santa Pola is a bustling small town with a great history. Santa Pola’s first settlers lived in the 3rd millennium BC in the Cave of Spiders of the Carabassi, on a vertical hillside overlooking a gully. From the 7th century BC the spread of agriculture and the influence of oriental societies, Greek and Phoenician, gave way to the Iberian culture, which left its mark in Santa Pola.
Crevillente - Travelling north from the Vega Baja you arrive in an area known as the Baix Vinalopó which includes Crevillente and Elche. Crevillente is located on the N-340 close to the A7 motorway and approximately 25 kilometers south of Alicante. You will soon discover that this is not a holiday town in the usual sense of the word but very much a town where people live and work and you will see here many older style buildings bearing testimony to the various historic cultures which have had such an influence on the town. It is mainly an industrial town but the old town centre is picturesque with many flat roofed Moorish houses.
Alicante - The second largest city in the province of Valencia with a population of around 300,000, Alicante has the look and feel of a modern city, however its modern look hides a history that goes back to the 4th Century BC. The city sits neatly beside the Mediterranean sea, proudly guarded by mountains which explains its history as an important sea port and trading centre. Alicante was founded by the Greeks who first settled there in about 320 BC. It was later conquered by the Romans in 201 BC and then by the Moors who held control until the 13th Century. The city has seen war and conflict right up until the Spanish Civil War 1936-39 when it was one of the last Spanish cities to fall to Franco.
Callosa de Segura - The town of Callosa de Segura is located north-west of Orihuela on the CV900, it is a municipality of Valencia (Spain) in the Alicante province and another of the Vega Baja (low fertile valley) towns. The 2005 census attributes Callosa de Segura with a population of just under 17,000 and an area of 25 km2, The town is dominated by the huge Callosa de Segura mountains standing behind it, and some of the houses of the town creep up the side of the mountain together with various crops high up on terraced slopes.
Dolores - When the War of Spanish Succession between the Bourbons and the Austrian Habsburgs divided Spain the Cardinal of Cartagena-Murcia, Luis Antonio de Belluga y Moncada, sided with the Bourbons. After their victory Felipe V granted the cardinal the title of 'Field Marshall' of Valencia.
