Known as 'The City of Palms', Elche is famous for its palm tree forest and for the making of shoes. Elche is a historical city with plenty of interesting places to visit including the Huerto del Cura (Priest's garden) with its famous 'Imperial Palm', the lovely Saint Mary's Basilica begun in the 17th Century and the Moorish Altamira Palace. The city has many shoe outlets, and has over 1,000 shoe factories and workshops, so be sure to buy some shoes on your visit.
When the Elche weather is fine, you can also visit the nearby Rio Safari Park, which is on the road to Santa Pola, walk among the palm trees and see a wide variety of animals, which you can also feed.
The best beach to visit from Elche is at Los Arenales del Sol, with miles of golden sand.
Interesting activities you could try include kitesurfing at Santa Pola.
Elche can be reached via the A-7 motorway, the CV-865 from Santa Pola, the N-340, and the CV-84 from Aspe, it is just 20 minutes drive from Alicante airport.
