Once an important Moorish fortress town, Novelda was previously settled by Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans. The town is approached via a beautiful valley (Valle Medio del Vinalopo) planted with almonds and vines and outside the town lies the ancient Castle of Mola dating from the 14th Century. Novelda is famous for its Modernist museum (Casa Museo Modernista) which is a must visit location for fans of Modernista architecture.
Novelda is famous for the production of marble, wine and saffron, it has a population of around 27,000.
Novelda is a modern town with beautiful squares, market place and a wonderful weekly market held on Wednesdays, it has a good range of shops and supermarkets. The nearby town of Elda has many interesting places to visit.
Places to visit in Novelda include Saint Mary Magdalene's Sanctuary, St Peter’s Church, Gómez-Tortosa Cultural Centre, the Archaeology Museum and the previously mentioned Casa Museo Modernista and Castle of Mola.
Novelda was the birthplace of the famous Spanish sailor Jorge Juan y Santacilia.
Alicante airport is around 25 kilometres away and the beautiful beaches of Santa Pola around a 30 minute drive.
