Sierra de Baza - Granada -

The National Parks of Sierra de Baza and Sierra de Castril date from the Byzantine period of history and are approximately two hours drive from the southern Costa Blanca.

Set in the northern part of the Province of Granada, the landscape there is just amazing: contrasting arid plateaus of ochre to red brown soil and deep green valleys. There can also be found springs and spas. Incredibly, the high plateau is a desert yet full of water with rivers and streams flowing into the subsoil.

The land structure is the key element of the different types of cave areas. These troglodyte dwellings are a testimony to the unique adaptation of man to his environment.

When caves are located in an area of hillocks, the caves either line the street or are grouped around a communal space known as the ‘placeta’. When they are distributed horizontally, there is usually one row on top of the other with winding paths. This type of cave can often have two floors with the façade being a great exterior feature as is the chimney.

A constant temperature is maintained in a cave house, cool on hot summer days and snug and warm in the cold of winter; they are also impenetrable. The uneven walls and ceilings- dug out by pickaxe then whitewashed- narrow corridors and little recesses all add to the charm of the experience of being in a cave house. Furniture tends to be very plain with a predominance of wicker. The largest grouping of caves in Spain is to be found in Guadx with its hillsides dotted with many caves.

The town of Baza is rich in monuments and is a crossroads of civilisation, comprising both Lordly buildings and the Moorish quarters. Here you can find workshops making hand crafted musical instruments such as lutes, mandolins and guitars. These are typical folklore pieces and are played at local fiestas. Craft work in this area dates back an incredible 7,000 years!

Also in the region is the mountain village of Castril de la Pena which is sheltered by a great rock located at the entrance to the National Park and is situated on a crystalline river from which it gets its name. The streets of the village cling to this spectacular rock.

The whole area has many remains of ancient civilisations and it is fascinating to visit and see people still living in the cave houses as their ancient ancestors did before them.

Villages which can be visited in the area include Charches, Baza, Cuevas del Campo, Caniles, Gor, Zújar, Freilar and Cúllar.
