Arrecife is a town with genuine Spanish character, it has been the capital city of Lanzarote since 1852 and is the islands commercial centre and main seaport. The first harbour was established in Arrecife during the 15th century when it was a popular target for pirates raiding the island, subsequently 2 castles were built there to protect the town from attack, both castles still exist though not in their original form, the Castillo de San Gabriel (16th century) was destroyed in 1586 and later restored, the Castillo de San José (1771) was most recently restored by the famous Canarian architect Cesar Manrique and turned into a modern art gallery.

Arrecife is located in the south-eastern part of Lanzarote, the International airport is located to the west of the city.
