The main historic part of Gran Canaria's capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Vegueta comprises a maze of narrow streets and pretty plazas and is where most of the cities interesting sights are to be found. Situated in the south of the city, bordering the commercial Triana district, Vegueta was where Juan Rejón founded the original city of 'Real de Las Palmas in 1478.
Among the most famous attractions in Vegueta are the Santa Ana Cathedral which was started in 1497 and took over 400 years to complete, the Casa de Colón, behind the cathedral and the house in which Christopher Columbus stayed before his epic voyage to the Americas, now a museum dedicated to his exploits, the Museo Canario, opened in 1897, and featuring many important archaeological finds from the early history of the island, the Plaza de Santo Domingo with its 18th century St Domingo church, the 17th century church of San Francisco de Borja (now a law court), and the Museu Diocesano de Arte Sacro, with displays of paintings and Spanish sculptures.
Vegueta is situated in the south of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria about 18 kilometres from the airport at Gando.
