The largest city in the Canary Islands, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was founded by Spanish conquistadors in June 1478. An important harbour and port for ships sailing around Africa and to the New World, Las Palmas became wealthy and became a significant target for pirate attacks. Explorer Christopher Columbus famously moored up in Las Palmas Bay before his first voyage to America, and a museum carrying his name can be found in the city (Casa Colon). With its current population of around 377,000 it is the 9th largest city in Spain, it relies heavily on tourism for its economic well being, with excellent weather conditions all year round, many visitors to the island arrive by ferry at its port.
