San Miguel de Salinas is a small Costa Blanca town located just inland from Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa.
Originally just a small village San Miguel de Salinas has grown in recent years due to the huge amount of development along this part of the coast, the demand for holiday homes and for re-location has increased and San Miguel de Salinas has been affected much like the majority of other towns and villages in the area.
Though not too much is known about the history of San Miguel de Salinas, it is thought that the first building there was a hermitage constructed in about 800 AD, the hermitage later became a Convent and Monastery and was occupied by Carmelite nuns and Augustine friars. The Convent was sacked in 1407, resulting in the foundation of the Brotherhood of San Gines, gathered to protect the Convent against attacks from Barbary Pirates.
The original parish church (dedicated to Saint Michael) was built in around 1600, and later re-built in 1689-1719. The town was largely destroyed (as were many others in the area) by the great earthquake of 1829. San Miguel de Salinas became an independent municipality in 1955.
Modern day San Miguel de Salinas has a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants and is just a 10 minute drive from the fine 'blue flag' beaches of the Orihuela Costa (Cabo Roig, La Zenia, Playa Flamenca etc). There are 3 excellent championship golf courses nearby including the renowned Villamartin course (which hosted the 1994 Mediterranean Open).
San Miguel de Salinas is located on the CV-941 and the CV-95 and is easily reached from the Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja areas, and from the AP-7 motorway which runs nearby.
