Gran Canaria's story goes back to pre-history, when a tribe called the Guanches (probably from North Africa) settled Gran Canaria along with the other Canary Islands, and held control until the arrival of the Spanish in the 14th and 15th centuries. Gran Canaria is situated about 210 kilometres from the north-west coast of Africa and has the highest population of the Canary Islands with around 800,000 inhabitants. Gran Canaria has become a hugely popular holiday destination due to its wonderful all year round climate, most of the sun-seekers head for the resorts in the south of the island.
